What We Offer: Retirement Board
Four LEgged Family
We are so happy to welcome retired horses at Rancho Agave. As a family of equestrians, we had a number of horses that retired from their jobs whether that be dressage, jumping, or polo. In the past we had these horses scattered around California at different facilities. Now we are able to bring them all “home” and extend that to our clients as well.
Our PHILOSOPHY
I like to tell incoming boarders… We let our retirees go au naturale. Yes, they will look a bit scruffy, have long flowing manes, and the gray will start to show on their faces. So no more big bubble baths, clipped legs, etc. But the non-negotiable for us is their health. We keep our horses on regular farrier cycles, put flymasks on in the summer (and rainsheets in heavy rain), and keep a close eye on their weight - not too fat, not too skinny. We have eyes on our horses constantly and multiple staff members live on site. We get to know each horse as an individual so we can more easily notice what is out of the ordinary.
The transition to this “au naturale” life can be a big departure from their daily routine as a performance horse, but they take to it remarkably quick.
Their new retired routine includes:
Living outside in pastures 24/7
Being in herds of 5-10 horses
No riding
Free choice hay and a small amount of grain for vitamins and minerals
As the manager, I coordinate farrier and vet appointments and make sure they are up-to-date on worming, vaccinations, and dentals. I take pride in knowing each horse as intimately as possible, ensuring all of their quirks and preferences (they have plenty) are accounted for. Sometimes that means a little handholding for the farrier or standing with the slow eaters to ensure they get all of their grain (and the chunky ones can’t swoop in early). Each horse becomes a true member of the family. These horses have given their lives for us to enjoy and have fun, so now it’s our priority to give them years of peace and bliss with their friends.
